Appearance:
Her Sprite in the game | Full-portrait of Herself
Mary looks like a young nine year old with long, flowing blonde hair that curls all the way to her lower shoulder blades. Along with this, she holds a pale creamy complexion that compliments her dark blue eyes (sometimes portrayed lighter than they should be in fan art). With her attire, she wears a green long-sleeved dress with complimentary cuff links at the ends. Around her neck, there lies a light blue ribbon; the whole outfit replicates a sense of 'sailor uniform'. To complete the look, she wears a pair of high black boots that go just below her knees.
Abilities:
Mary does not have any outstanding qualities. In the game, she is known to use a palette knife as a weapon to harm someone, but she seems to only know how to stab it forward. She has no prior canon knowledge on weapon use, or how to fight in combat.
Personality:
Roleplay Sample - Journal:
I think Mary will adjust and fit snuggly into all the chaos, and torture. Though I'd imagine she's a squealer, if brought to the task of wanting something, she'll go along with it. Since she's already past her point of breaking, not much else can be said. She can't go insane when she already is!

Mary is a young girl who was created from an artist, and kept in a museum for all her life. Well, it's not really a museum. It's more of a gate way world-like museum that you enter through a painting. But this is a world where no one visits, and barely anyone knows about it. Because falling into pictures to enter a new world is just ridiculous, right? Or so people say.
Mary, who has been alone all her life, is inadequate in dealing with people. She does not know how to talk, or interact with other people. She also does not know how to channel her emotions into positive, or calmer ways. They come out in random bursts, and with that, all her enthusiam pours into it. Like when she talks about liking colors, or how she thinks Ib's ribbon is beautiful. She says whatever comes to her mind, and is just a bright child.
But being alone for a long part of your life can do serious damage. It had done that for her. You see, when Ib and Garry first entered the museum, Mary was probably overjoyed at seeing people there. She thought that she could finally make friends, and get out of where she is. Because she was tired of not having people, and being all alone. To Mary, this was a beacon of hope. What little girl doesn't hope?
But due to being alone, she does not know how to handle anger, or adversary. She lashes out, and explodes with murderous rage whenever things don't go her way. She cracks sideways like a broken egg that could have the yolk oozing out at any moment. But this isn't her fault. She only knows what she wants, needs, and craves. And to have that possibly ripped from her, you can only imagine the fear that envelops her.
She is, in truth, a very sweet person. She likes snow, is curious about Ib's parents, loves the color blue and yelllow, and even loves drawing. She compliments Ib, and tries to share similiar interests with her; she has an endearing affection for Ib that may be a little twisted, but hopeful nonetheless. But she is also ruthless, and can do what she needs to do to get her way. She is implusive, and can be violent, and is, unfortunately, driven insane.
She may have the emotions of a nine year old, but her mind is much older. She can think of manipulation and consequences. She can be quite cunning, and spectacular at doing things that other nine year olds wouldn't consider. She has been in the enchanted museum for so long, and since no one knows how long it has been, her mind may very well be too ripe for her body.
But , as stated earlier, she is only a scared child. A lost, lonely, confused, and needy child who hopes of things far beyond what she can receive. And she's desperate. That combination makes a very rotten mix that people often overlook.History:
Imagine being in a world you don't know of. A place where paintings, and sculptures come to life with deadly intentions. Now imagine yourself as a young girl who just lost her parents, only to find that what lies in finding them is an adventure of horror, and having to be braver than you actually are.
The main protagonist of the game is named Ib, a very quiet and reserved nine year old girl who comes to the museum with her parents. When they arrive, it happens to be an exhibit for a painter called Guertena (who paints Mary but that will come later). The whole museum is show-casing his work which ranges from paintings to sculpture alike; some abstract, and some clear-cut. All of them enticing, and mystying in their own way.
Ib, not wanting to stay with her parents, decides to venture off with her mothers permission. As she looks around the area, and talks to the people within the exhibit, she stumbles upon a wide painting that covers up an entire hallway. In the painting, it depicts a very odd and abstract design which captures her attention. Enough attention to read the description.
Upon reading the description at the bottom of the painting, the lights begin to flicker. They soon falter and darkness envelops the museum. Ib walks out of the hallway but soon finds that the people she had talked to before are no longer there. They aren't anywhere; they just vanished. So Ib goes back to where she left her parents, but finds they aren't there as well.
This begins the exploration of the museum for little Ib. In order to find her parents, and escape whatever world she is in (and what a strange world it is). Along the way, she has to read clues, and experience horrifying scenes like blood dripping down windows, and whisper-like footsteps. It's enough to make someone go a little mad, and for a young girl to venture so far into it, she was probably terrified.
All of these things lead her deeper into the rabbit hole of Guertena's works, much to her chagrin. She runs from chasing paintings, and figures out puzzles that help her along her way, pointing her in the 'supposed' right direction. As she is following riddles, she runs into a man named Garry who appears to be someone who got lost like her.
They both form an alliance in order to escape from the museum, both using their strengths to help one another. Not long after they found each other, they find another girl. And you can guess correctly that this girl is named Mary. Garry, mistakenly thinking she was another lost museum-goer, takes her in along with Ib and all of them try to find a way out.
It isn't till the near end of the game that Garry realizes that Mary is not human, but is a painting come to life. This happens when they all get cut off by a sculpture, creating Garry as a single, and Ib and Mary as a group. (A little fun fact: the painting that grew and separated them had a name along the lines of 'vines of jealously'). It is probable that Mary did this on purpose to be alone with Ib.
He decides to explore his own side of the museum in order to reunite with his now good friends while Ib and Mary try to find a way to him. But as Gary is searching, he stumbles upon a library with books stacked and dusting on shelves. Looking through the descriptions of Guetena's works, he finds a remarkably similiar picture of Mary (the full portrait link above). But the date of her creation is not marked.
This stuns Garry and as he races to tell Ib what he found out, a painting (yes, a painting. Of an ear actually) spills out his discovery to Mary and this causes Mary to become erratic, and go slightly psychotic when Ib tries to talk to her. She soon leaves Mary in search for Garry in order to kill him. This is where I'll be taking her; when she runs away from Ib, searching for him.
While they were exploring beforehand, some books have said that Guertena transferred some of his soul into his paintings. Which is why they come to life and fullfill whatever he expected out of them (whatever he wrote). For example. the Lady in Red is said to be a woman who is insatiable and will stop at nothing to find something she loves. In the game, she chases you as though she wants you and will hurt you when she finds/touches you.
Assuming Guertena died before all the paintings came to life, Mary had probably spent a lot of time alone in the museum. Another little girl trapped in a place with no escape. Without anyone to contact her, or play with her. Aside from knowing the museum like clock-work, she had made up her own world made up of crayon-like drawings. This suggests she was there for a very long time.
Even though it is said that Guertena never makes any portraits for someone in real life, Mary has such detail and personality that it is concerned as to whether to was based off someone or not. Another good thing to mention is that Garry and Ib may have encountered Mary or things that Mary had done throughout their time in the museum. When Garry uses his lighter to brighten up the room, the ground shakes and the lights flicker on. What greets them is giant words with crayon all over saying things like 'stop'.Roleplay Sample - Log [canon-based]:
"Do you know about snow, Ib?"
Mary asked because she had heard about it on occasions. Some of the paintings in the museum adorned bright white in a landscape of tranquility and meditation. She had stared at them longingly, and even touched the paintings. But the contact brought her no happiness, or relief. All she felt were ridges, and wood that were no colder than the museum floor itself.
So she opted to ask if Ib had ever experienced snow. Her excitement poured through her eyes like a waterfall after being rained into. And when Ib said yes, Mary found the waterfall spreading into an ocean of curiousity and hope. It made her feel happy to know that if she got out of there, Ib would show her snow. Because she loved Ib very much and desperately wanted to leave. And Ib would let her.
She never meant to hurt anyone; in fact, she didn't want to hurt anyone. Garry was in the way of her precious escape, and now that he knew she was a painting, he would ruin everything! No one understood that she ached badly; she ached so much that the museum would quake and even moan out in sorrow. She was suffocating, and it made her so painfully desolate. But a burst of hot hope came through her when she saw Ib.
Her ribbon was so pretty, and she only hoped her blue one could be as pretty as hers. She hoped they could play dolls together, and dreamed of everything they could do together. It was the happiest she felt in so long, and now that her own world created no solace, she could venture into their world and find a place she truly belonged in.
She took Ib's hands, and smiled at her, hoping to see the same happiness in Ib's eyes. But they were laced with concern and fear for Garry. That meddling adult. He didn't know what he was doing! But she didn't have to worry. Ib didn't need to be concerned. Because Mary was going to take care of them, and then they could be together forever.
Roleplay Sample - Journal:
[A grotesque doll with bulging red eyes, and incredibly stringy hair appears on the screen, grinning a very cruel smile. From behind it, there appears to be a mess of yellow with a patch of green. As the doll moves around in a comical manner, a girly voice talks from behind it.]This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function?
Has anyone seen a man with blue for hair? I really like blue! Except not that kind of blue . . . but have you seen him?
[The doll disappears, revealing a girl with wide blue eyes; the nature behind them suggests you should be wary, and maybe a little frightened. They're a little too wide, and almost overwhelmingly desperate.]
Tell me where he is. Hehe. Tell me. Tell me. Heha . . . he ha HAAH HAH HAHAAH!
[Her cute smile splits into stretched grin before she bursts out into a hearty, and high pitched laughter; it kind of makes you wanna shift in your seat. But don't worry. She only want to be your friend. The laughing calms down, and she is staring at you again, heated but the smile is gone. It then clicks off.]
I think Mary will adjust and fit snuggly into all the chaos, and torture. Though I'd imagine she's a squealer, if brought to the task of wanting something, she'll go along with it. Since she's already past her point of breaking, not much else can be said. She can't go insane when she already is!
